Politics & Poem

June 28, 2017

Because of the Trump election, more people are seeing that politics permeates everything. The Republican Party are hell-bent on doing all that they can to transfer as much wealth as possible from us to them and their masters. Thanks to Donald Trump, it's becoming obvious to more and more people what has been hidden: America is not a Democracy. But what isn't visible to many is that American Literature is not a Meritocracy.Esthetic judgements are not immune to political realities. To test this statement, a curious reader might want to look at the review of Maggie Jaffe's Continuous Performance, where I start by stating that esthetics is always reactionary and Robert Penn Warren's Chief Joseph that I consider the worst long poem ever written, and my review of Johnathan Holden's review of Carolyn Forche's The Country Between Us: The Literary Critic as the CIA.
